This position will play a leadership role in new development and preventative maintenance
project planning, budget development and research. Key principles integral to this position
include: understanding and meeting public needs and trends, determining strategic allocation of resources, understanding park design and practical operational needs, and feasibility analysis of park development projects.
Details: The position will provide technical, scientific and economic planning direction to
statewide parks and recreation program, to department managers and boards, other
department programs, and other state and federal agencies to ensure the preservation of the
department's investment in infrastructure, facilities, and natural resources and be responsive to
the needs and opportunities for outdoor recreation; will conduct analysis of pertinent research,
data, inventories, needs, and public input; and provides administrative direction to department
managers and a statewide parks and recreation assessment and planning program by preparing and implementing a long‐term development plan for all phases of the program to ensure and maintain the integrity of the program's purpose.
The incumbent must be capable of occasionally working in less than desirable outdoor
conditions, rugged outdoor terrain or marine environments, and ability to travel statewide and
occasionally overnight. A bachelor's or master's degree in planning, landscape architecture,
natural resources, engineering or equivalent is preferred.
Salary: $47,669.04 ‐ $60,848.50 annually, depending on experience. The State of South Dakota
