The Art of Managing Stormwater. Participants will be encouraged to use their “whole brains” (as opposed to “right” or “left”) while planning, designing and implementing stormwater management practices. An analysis of current regulatory and design approaches will be contrasted with case studies demonstrating successful challenges to traditional thinking.

The Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) is a comprehensive framework and rating system promoting practices in the protection and enhancement of ecosystem services and the benefits provided to our communities through best practices and management of soil, water, vegetation, materials, and human health. This session will review the SITES framework in light of challenges faced in sustainable development in the intermountain west, the desired benefits, and advantages of SITES certification.

FMRP: Surprises, Do's, & Don'ts of Opening a Regional Park Facility
Is your town opening a new regional park facility? Or thinking about pursuing one? Missoula Parks and Recreation opened Phase 1 of Fort Missoula Regional Park (FMRP) in March of 2017 and plans to open Phase 2 in Spring of 2018. We’ll discuss some of the surprises, dos, and don’ts of opening facilities to the public for a variety of events at FMRP. We will also look forward to the opening of FMRP Phase 2 and potential openings in cities around Montana & Idaho to discuss what we can do to improve systems, programming, and delivery of services.
Fort Missoula Regional Park is the culmination of 20+ years of community support and vision for a regional park facility in Missoula, Montana. The 2014 Parks and Trails Bond was passed by votes by about 55% of the electorate. $42 million dollars was allocated for FMRP, County Parks and Trails, and 10 new or updated playgrounds in the City of Missoula. Phase 1 includes 11 multi-use sport fields, including the state-of-the-art Bella Vista Synthetic Turf Championship field. Amenities also include the large Bella Vista Pavilion, 2 inclusive playgrounds, restroom facilities, over 2 miles of trails, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Prairie, and many sustainable features (SITES). Phase 2 will include 7 American Softball Association (ASA) standard softball fields, Mac the Moose’s inclusive playground, 2 picnic shelters, an outdoor fitness area, completion of over 5 miles of trails (connecting with phase 1), dog park, resurfaced tennis courts, 6 dedicated pickleball courts, Missoula Parks and Recreation Headquarters, the Commons gathering/hangout area, and the Greens lawn games area.

Fort Missoula Regional Park
Fort Missoula Regional Park is a new 156 acre destination park in the Missoula Valley. The park improvements were funded by a $38 million county wide general obligation bond. The park is within a historic district and interprets the Civilian Conservation Corp era. Multiple features within the park are “state of the art” or “firsts in Montana”.
Join us to learn lessons from behind the scenes and on topics from “building partnerships to sustainable design and construction” and “developing a business plan to telling a story that matters” and “opening a brand new facility and meeting or exceeding expectations to applying best practices in design for SITES and CPTED”. Following an introduction to the project, delegates can visit multiple stations to learn first-hand from designers, maintainers, programmers and historians how to go from brainstorming to delivery and “if we had it to do over what we would do the same and what we would do differently and why."

The Mount Dean Stone Project seeks to create a complex of connected and conserved lands across more than 4,000 acres between Pattee Canyon and Miller Creek, connecting City of Missoula open space and conservation lands to state and U.S. Forest Service lands in the Sapphire Mountains. The timbered draws and grassy slopes of these properties offer the Missoula community a unique opportunity to expand access to trails and outdoor recreation, while also protecting important wildlife habitat and wildlife movement corridors.

Lifeguard Instructor Refresher Course Continued
The American Red Cross lifeguard program is the leader in the industry. In 2017 the updated Lifeguard program was released incorporating new terminology and techniques. One requirement of the updated program was that all instructors complete a “polisher” course to ensure consistency of presentation and standards for lifeguard candidates. The polisher course is required once every two years to maintain instructor certification. Bring your suit and several towels as we will be in and out of the water!

Playground Primer Panel and Field Trip
The City of Missoula leveraged a $1.0 million general obligation bond to plan, design, purchase and construct 13 new and unique playgrounds in 18 months at a cost exceeding $1.3 million. This session will focus on: project approach, asset management planning for playgrounds, use of housing and demographic data, design strategies, utilizing play value information, public processes, working with playground vendors, purchasing strategies, and implementation. Following the presentation, go on tour to see the new playgrounds and ask questions regards playground design, equipment performance, construction challenges, and maintenance.
