The most effective and critical time for formative pruning of young trees is the first ten years after a tree is planted. Tree that do not receive formative pruning have a significantly shorter lifespan than those young trees that do receive formative pruning. Unfortunately, young trees in parks and along streets do not receive this crucial pruning. Properly trained volunteers are an option to provide formative pruning to young trees in park and along streets. The 5-step formative pruning method provides a systematic approach for volunteers to properly prune young trees.
